History

In 1951 when the Railway Scientific Research Institute was founded the deed of foundation prescribed the establishement of the library.The library collects all of the specialities of MÁV and the adjoining special fields too. Since the foundation documentary activities have constituted part of library work. Since 1957 our library has published a publication whose name is "Information on railway technical literature". The collections of the library has progressivly grewn. In 1965 a common order was enacted by the Ministry of Transport and Post and the Ministry of Cultural Affairs to regulate the transport library system. It defined the function of documentation organizations. The library got the status of documentation centre of MÁV in 1991. The collection of the Documentation Centre and Library is unique in the field of railway transport in our country.
In 1998 a directive of MÁV was published on the unification of the library units of MÁV and our centre became the information centre and supervisory body. Since 2000 we have established as a public library. According to the published directive of MÁV in 2007 the new tasks were added to the library.

Goals and functions

Goals and function of Documentation Centre and Library of MÁV are followings:

• Collection, processing, lending and giving information completely concerning the national railway literature and selectively concerning the international railway literature and documents of adjoining special fields,
• Acquisition of Hungarian periodicals for Direction of MÁV Co.,
• Administration of translating,
• Professional management and supervision of all the libraries and information offices of MÁV, consultations,
• Edition of publications
• Taking part in interlibrary loan,
• Giving information for specialists of railway and information services using Hungarian and foreign data bases,
• Regular information on the collection and services of the Documentation Centre and Library,
• Registers of railway research reports,
• Collection, processing, lending, storage of copyright copies from every MÁV organization,
• Cooperation with national and international organizations
• Supply of data on library statistics and its organization at the library units of MÁV,
• Organization of training courses for the librarians of MÁV.

Structure

The Documentation Centre and Library belongs to the Organisation of Administration and Documentation.
Library: number of catalogued publications amounts to 36000 documents. The scope of collections of the library covers the whole range of national technical literature related to railway transport and selected collection of the international technical literature.
Thematic collections of the library cover all the fields of MÁV activities and verging branches of science as f.e.: mechanics, transport law, informatics, physics etc.
Processing of the documents is done by integral library software, DrLib.
