About Us

The Hungarian State Railways (MÁV) Central Archives were opened in 2005. The archives contain most of MÁV’s non-discardable documents and blueprints older than 15 years. The archives are run by the Public Record Office of the Legal Department. Since 2001, the Public Record Office has been collecting and processing the files and most important project plans of MÁV’s six Directors’ offices and those of the Managing Director’s office. Currently, there are about 3 million files and blueprints on storage. The archives primarily handle the documents related to the daily operations of MÁV, such as documents pertaining to tracks, bridges, elevated construction, mechanics, real estate, as well as to telecommunications, high-voltage, and safety equipment. The archives also contain documents of historical value; the manuscripts date back to 1845, containing numerous files from the railroad’s historical golden age. A special feature of our archives is that most of our files (2.5 million documents) are available for research in digital format. The number of digitally accessible files is constantly increasing.
