The main scope of MÁV ZRt. Centre of Standardization is to elaborate a standardized process for technical tasks frequently deriving from railway transportation.

Originally, it was the MÁV Hungarian Institute of Standardization, founded in 1950 as legal predecessor of MÁV ZRt. Centre of Standardization, which had been in charge of this work in an institutionalized form in Hungary.

In more than half a century that has passed since then approximately 2000 railway standards have been put into effect related to most various parts of railway. Out of them there are about 1300 standards that are still in effect.

Those invalidated standards that are still considered as core technical documents in railway history are being kept.
